Community Spotlight: John Canonico

John Canonico, agency owner of Brightway Insurance, Oviedo-Winter Springs, genuinely enjoys helping people, which is why we are honored to have him serve as a board member of the Oviedo Police Foundation.

We’d love to take a moment to introduce him!

Meet John Canonico

John has been a resident of the Oviedo-Winter Springs community since 2007 and has been an active member of several local service groups.

In addition to the Oviedo Police Foundation, he is also a member of the Oviedo-Winter Springs Chamber, the Winter Park Masonic Lodge, and was a part of the local Rotary Club for several years. He also spends his free time volunteering with Give Kids the World, teaching Sunday School, sponsoring the Oviedo Optimist Club, and going on mission trips with Soles for Souls.

He has been honored with several service awards for his work in these various organizations.

As we mentioned, he is also the agency owner at Brightway Insurance, a local agency that sells home, auto, and business insurance all over the state of Florida. His agency has been in the top growth agencies since opening. He is considered an insurance industry leader in training and business growth by the Brightway leadership.

John also has the unique designation of insuring several professional athletes. If you ask him how this happened, he will say it definitely was the work of the Lord and helpful referrals.

The insurance industry has been impacted greatly by the storms, fraud and avalanche of claims. Covid also hit the pool of job seekers very hard. Through all of this, John has continued to provide the best service possible for his thousands of clients. All while participating in many of his volunteer responsibilities.

Because he’s an integral part of this community, we felt that it would be beneficial for the community to get to know John just a little bit better. Here’s what he had to say about living, working, and serving in this community.

What about the Oviedo community means the most to you?

I love that it’s a “little large town.” You get to know people quickly and they are friendly. I have lived all over Florida. Oviedo is my favorite place to live!

What are your top three restaurants in Oviedo?

That’s a tough choice! Top three are Rock and Brews, Stefano’s, and Mission BBQ. But an honorable mention goes to De la Vega!

What are your top three things to do in Oviedo?

I love getting together with friends, going out to area restaurants, and attending events that are hosted in the city. There’s always so much going on!

How did you first get involved with OPF?

I was invited by one of the members to join and help out with some of the events. I have a strong background in running golf tournaments so I was happy to help!

What about OPF made you want to stay involved?

I get really excited about the things OPF can do to help officers and provide for their needs. They are involved with police dogs, officers who have had medical issues, or people who have lost family members. The foundation also provides help with mental health issues and I believe that is tremendously important for the police department. I am honored to be a part of something that is a benefit for our police force which, of course, benefits the community.

Thank you John!

John is really irreplaceable in our foundation and the Oviedo/Winter Springs community as a whole. He’s dedicated to helping people and that makes all the difference.
